Volunteerism tagged Emmaus

The Laterina community, one of the longest running with more than 50 years of existence, opens its doors to welcome volunteers/campers sharing the Emmaus community way of life and its civic, democratic and nonviolent values, and to be ‘provocateurs of change’.

If you have a desire to ‘engage’ in all fronts of solidarity, if you don’t want to turn your back on the great social and environmental challenges of our time, then an Emmaus volunteer experience is what you’ve been looking for:

  • You will be involved in the classic activities of collecting, sorting, selling, reusing, and repairing used materials that distinguish Emmaus communities;
  • You will contribute to the organization and implementation of solidarity initiatives put in place by our association, where ‘rejected’ people and things become valuable resources and opportunities for active resilience;
  • You will work alongside people welcomed into the community enriching yourself with their great human experience, in fact the person ‘helped’…is not always the one you think!!!
  • You will appreciate the real value of time, things and life, living simply in sharing with the community, away from the superfluous and wasteful;

Immersed in the heart of Tuscany, in direct contact with nature among vineyards and centuries-old olive groves, it will be possible to live a unique experience of civic passion and ancient beauty, including a full day off (at your own expense) to get to know the historical sites in the surrounding area: Arezzo (20 km), Siena (50 km), Florence (60 km),Cortona (40km) or the monastery of Camaldoli (50 km), etc.

Volunteers will participate in:

  • self-funding activities typical of the Emmaus movement (going out with the truck to pick up, by appointment at the houses, the used material; sorting, placing used goods at the fair market; dismantling and sorting of recoverable ferrous metals;
  • outreach activities and sale of the material through the Emmaus solidarity flea market);
  • redevelopment of spaces in the host community (cleaning, painting, gardening, upgrading spaces);
  • promotion of the association in the area and on social media (videos, flash mobs, posters, leafleting)
  • research and enhancement of documents in the historical archive dedicated to the founders, Franco Bettoli and his wife Margit
